How much do I feed my Chessie?

How much do I feed my Chessie?

Postby esalzman » Thu Jun 11, 2020 3:51 pm

Hi,

We just adopted a 12 month old Chessie, and I'm wondering how much I should be feeding him. The vet said that he is underweight, but recommended 1500 calories a day, which is less than what we have been giving him. We keep him pretty active. Is this calorie recommendation correct? Thanks so much for all suggestions.

What does the dog weigh right now? Do you have a pic you can post? What food are you feeding, and how many cups per day?

Typically I like to keep my young dogs a bit lean as pups. I aim for about a 4+ on the BCS. I think this puts much less stress on the long bones and joints as the pup develops into its adult form than if they are heavier and carrying more weight. My dogs get 4 cups of Purina Pro Plan a day ( 2 cups morning and 2 cups at night). A good description of body condition score (BCS) can be found here: https://www.thedrakecenter.com/services/pets/blog/fit-or-fat-your-pets-body-condition-score-bcs or https://www.aaha.org/globalassets/02-guidelines/weight-management/weightmgmt_bodyconditionscoring.pdf.

Welcome to the brown dog world and keep us posted on how your pup progresses.
